Trend Spotting: Bare Bulbs

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Lately I am just loving the industrial, minimalist look of bare bulb lighting. These hanging pendants are so understated but when done right, can add so much style to a space. I think multiples is the key - one bulb alone can look a bit severe but when in a grouping they are a wonderfully modern take on a chandelier. I especially love this kitchen below, mounting a black metal ceiling rod is a brilliant way to hang these pendants. Also, so sorry but no eco friendly bulbs here - vintage inspired or oversized filament bulbs are the prettiest when they are the star of the show!

Would you love this look in your home?

If you are in the market, I adore the vintage feel of these from New England Design Co. and the bright neon hues of these from Earth Sea Warrior . . . .

S+B Style Crush: Jenny Wolf Interiors

Monday, May 20, 2013

I have a major style crush on NY based designer Jenny Wolf. I shared a bright and lovely office by her a few weeks ago and really just adore her whole portfolio. This is her own loft in New York - I love seeing designers own homes and this one is especially fun. My favorite elements are juxtaposition of traditional with eclectic, modern pieces and the unexpected color choices. I love the pops of coral and how the dining area walls are just the very palest shade of blush pink. It's such a warm and sophisticated space.

Do you share my crush?

House Tour: Petite But Perfect in San Fran

Friday, May 17, 2013

I just love this small but airy home in San Francisco I spotted on A Cup of Jo. At just 500 square feet, a family of four is certainly cozy here but lots of clever space saving tricks {and I am sure a lot of editing!} makes it feel just perfect. My take away tips:

{1} Fresh white walls and trim punctuated but a few brightly colored accessories and textiles creates an peaceful and spacious feel
{2} Using wall mounted sconces instead of bedside tables frees up valuable space
{3} Opt for window blinds or roman shades over floor length curtains for a less cluttered look

Spot any other great small space tips?

I especially love the boy's shared bedroom - so sweet!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful weekend to come.

Graphic Beauties: Vintage Ads

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

While just at the V&A museum in London in April, I was so inspired by their collection of amazing vintage advertisements {I took photos but all turned out so blurry!} I just love their bold graphics, bright clear colors and retro appeal. Now that I am back home and staring at the very white walls of our new apartment I am determined to find a great source online! Any sites you love?

I came across this British site, VinMag, which has some wonderful ones, as well as Mid Century Moments on Etsy but I think my search will continue . . . . wish me luck!

Daily Dose: Mod + Cozy in the Kitchen

Monday, May 13, 2013

I love the clean look of a modern kitchen but find they can feel so cold! This kitchen stikes just the perfect balance with so many charming and clever details. Here are a few of my very favorites:

{1} Warm chocolate countertops and fun wide striped backsplash
{2} The small framed painting and large photographic print - art in the kitchen is always a great idea!
{3} Pretty open shelving filled with lots of colorful cookbooks - useful and beautiful
{3} Split level counters - they break up the space and provide a comfortable height for cooking or eating
{4} The lovely retro light pendant - a hanging fixture creates ambiance

Any details you like?

Designer Dilema: How To Choose?!

Thursday, May 9, 2013

When I create spaces for my clients I generally have a strong feeling about the design direction, but somehow when it's for our home I flip flop about it forever! I guess when there is no other person to take into account, my mind runs a bit wild with all the fun choices. I am ordering a large piece of art for our living room and I keep day dreaming about how each option would look and what accessories, details, and colors would follow. I think I love them all but I have to stop designing and re-designing in my head. So I am enlisting your help . . . I need your votes please!

{Please excuse the hastily constructed mockups!}

The sofa, rug and yellow side chairs are already in the works so tell me. . . which canvas do you like the best? Thank you!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week!

I just have to wish a happy 90th birthday to my amazing and thoroughly modern Grandma. You are such an inspiration and I adore hearing about your 1970s chic black and yellow living room {dying to find a good photo!} you have always been ahead of your time. So this post is just for you and proof that black and yellow is just as chic now as it was then! I love you!

{fantastic with a bolt of apple green too!}

The lovely Ms. Spicer Katz
Happy Birthday Gram!
